Purpose of the Visa

This route allows individuals who have lived lawfully and continuously in the UK for at least 10 years to settle permanently. It recognises long‑term residents who have contributed to UK life across different visa types, such as student, work, or family visas.

Eligibility Requirements

  • 10 years of continuous lawful residence in the UK under qualifying visa categories.
  • No single absence of more than 180 days and total absences not exceeding 540 days across the 10‑year period.
  • Must meet the English language requirement at B1 CEFR or higher.
  • Must pass the Life in the UK Test.
  • Must have maintained lawful status throughout the 10 years (no overstaying beyond permitted grace periods).
  • Must be of good character and comply with all UK immigration laws.

Documents Required

  • Passports covering the full 10‑year period of residence.
  • Biometric Residence Permits (if applicable).
  • Home Office letters or visas confirming lawful status during the period.
  • Evidence of residence such as council tax, utility bills, tenancy agreements, or bank statements.
  • Life in the UK Test pass certificate and English language test result.

Gaps and Absences

Applicants must ensure there are no significant breaks in residence. Absences exceeding 180 days at once or 540 days in total normally break continuity. Short periods of overstaying may be disregarded only under limited Home Office discretion.

Decision and Outcome

If approved, Indefinite Leave to Remain grants permanent residence in the UK, allowing freedom to work, study, and live without restriction. It is an important step toward British citizenship for those who meet the subsequent eligibility requirements.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • Missing travel or residence records leading to unverified absences.

  • Unlawful stay due to visa expiry or late application submission.

  • Incorrect interpretation of continuous residence requirements.

  • Failing to meet the Life in the UK or English language test standards.
