Purpose of the Visa

This route allows individuals to come to the UK to marry or enter a civil partnership with a British citizen or settled person. It is granted for six months and is designed to lead to the Partner visa once the marriage or civil partnership has taken place.

Eligibility Requirements

  • Both partners aged 18 or over and free to marry or form a civil partnership in the UK.

  • Partner must be British or hold ILR/settled/pre-settled status under Appendix EU.

  • Intention to live together permanently in the UK after marriage.

  • Meet the financial requirement – income of at least £29,000 per year (new applications from 11 April 2024).

  • Meet the English language requirement at A1 CEFR or higher from an approved test centre.

  • Provide evidence of suitable accommodation in the UK without public funds.

Supporting Documents

  • Proof of relationship – photos, communication records, travel evidence, and joint plans.
  • Notice of marriage or civil partnership intent (where available).
  • Evidence of financial requirement – employment income, self-employment records, or savings.
  • English language certificate (A1 level or above).
  • Accommodation evidence (tenancy agreement or ownership documents).

After the Wedding or Civil Partnership

After the ceremony, you may apply from within the UK to switch to the Partner visa under Appendix FM. This visa grants permission to work and leads to settlement after five years if requirements are maintained.
